01

When an extension needs SAP

Extensions with glazing above the normal elemental allowance may need a SAP assessment to show that the proposed design performs no worse than a compliant reference extension. We confirm the appropriate calculation route from the drawings and Building Control comments.

02

Test the design before it is fixed

We model the extension, existing dwelling, glazing, fabric and heating arrangements so the impact of larger doors, rooflights and open-plan layouts is understood early. Practical options can then be tested without defaulting to unnecessary specification increases.

03

A clear Building Control submission

The completed assessment explains the method, assumptions and comparison result in a format suitable for the project team and Building Control. Where needed, we coordinate supporting U-value calculations and revised specifications.

Selected anonymised examples showing how the assessment supported design, compliance or completion.

01

Highly glazed extension

Large sliding-door and rooflight design

The proposed glazing exceeded the standard allowance. The extension and existing dwelling were modelled together, allowing fabric and services improvements to be compared against the reference design.

A proportionate compliance route was established without removing the main glazing features.
02

Northern Ireland extension

Glazing specification reviewed before order

Window, door and rooflight performance was checked alongside the proposed construction build-ups before products were finalised.

The design team received clear target values and avoided late changes to the opening sizes.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Clear answers.
No guesswork.

01Does every extension require SAP?+

No. SAP is commonly requested where glazing exceeds the normal allowance or where Building Control accepts an alternative whole-dwelling approach.

02Can insulation compensate for additional glazing?+

Often, but the best combination depends on the extension geometry, existing dwelling and proposed services. We test the realistic options.

03Do you need to visit?+

Most extension assessments can be completed remotely from scaled drawings, specifications and photographs.
